GALERIA SUR was founded by Jorge Castillo and Martin Castillo in 1985 in Punta del Este, Uruguay. His first place was a historic 19th century saladero, located on Calle de las Palmeras, a few meters from the port. It currently has a modern and elegant space in La Barra, Punta del Este. Since its inception, it has been linked to the artistic and cultural environment of the Río de la Plata, helping to consolidate the identity of Uruguayan and River Plate art abroad, through its active participation and collaboration in numerous exhibitions, biennials and fairs. The Gallery specializes in the Historic Vanguards of the Río de La Plata of the 20s, 30s and 40s and in the Escuela del Sur. In the Masters of Latin American Modern Art, with particular emphasis on Torres García, Barradas, Berni, Lam, Matta, Botero, Figari, Gurvich, Di Cavalcanti, Portinari, Segall and Diego Rivera, as well as in the Concrete and Kinetic Art Movements of the Río de la Plata with artists such as José Pedro Costigliolo, María Freire, Miguel Ángel Pareja, Víctor Magariños D., Hilda López and Julio Le Parc. It also represents important contemporary artists such as Pablo Atchugarry, Eduardo Cardozo, Marcelo Legrand, Ignacio Iturria, Wifredo Díaz Valdéz and Octavio Podestá, among others.
